Indi Kindi, a program run by the Moriarty Foundation, prepares young Indigenous children for school in the remote communities of Borroloola and Robinson River – a 10 hour drive from Darwin.
Led and taught by local Aboriginal people, the program has bridged the gap in early childhood education by reaching 80% of preschool Indigenous children in the area.
Parents say it’s “deadly” because the children can speak in any of the five local languages, learn about their culture and, at the same time, it helps them become school ready. The program also offers local employment and training, access to healthcare and importantly, involves local families.
Our Foundation provided seed funding to Indi Kindi between 2011 to 2014, now Indi Kindi has a partnership with UNICEF Australia which will double the number of preschool children in Indi Kindi and enable the program to expand to Tennant Creek.
